Title: InterACTive Citizenship

Duration 9 months / Volunteering period: 1st September2013 – 31st May 2014

Context and Objectives:

As citizens, we all have an obligation to intervene and become involved – it's the citizen who changes things.” Jose Saramago, Nobel-laureate novelist, playwright & journalist

This reciprocal multilateral EVS project, “InterACTive Citizenship” takes up the motto of the 2013 “European Year of Citizens” by promoting active citizenship through volunteering.
We celebrate the “European Year of Citizens”, which marks the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the European Union Citizenship under the Maastricht Treaty in 1993,
by mobilising and coordinating young people’s active engagement in citizenship activities around the globe.

Annually over 2000 young people from around the world engage in short and long-term voluntary service programmes and activities through the ICYE Federation alone,
and through this they make a difference in society.
The European Commission recognizes volunteering as “an essential element in active citizenship: by giving one’s time for the benefit of others,
volunteers service their community and play an active role in society”.
Volunteering therefore has the potential to develop citizens’ commitment to society and to political life in society. Volunteering creates bonds, trust and solidarity,
and opens up the possibility of learning and exchange among people around the world.

The 11 volunteers – 6 from the EU, 5 from Asia, Africa and Latin America – in this 9-month EVS project will not only live in another country and be exposed to its cultural diversity,
they will also actively engage in the most diverse range of civil society projects addressing community development (UK), human rights, refugees & the homeless (Italy, Iceland),
the disabled (Spain, India), health and education (Nigeria), street children (Bolivia), the elderly (Indonesia), poverty alleviation, empowerment and education (Uganda,
India) and voluntary service and active citizenship  (Poland). Thereby, the 11 young active citizens will interACT with and for people with fewer opportunities.

The commitment to analysing and critiquing social institutions, unjust social structures and one’s own implicit prejudices and racism will take them a long way in instilling an obligation to intervene,
disseminate good practice and encourage actions and activities that lead to social change. These young people will be interACTive agents of citizenship creating awareness
and stimulating debate on the need for the larger involvement of civil society in European and non-European countries alike.

The project thus aims at solidarity and trust, and opening up possibilities of learning and exchange on active citizenship and the responsibilities that go with it.

Aims and objectives

The main aims and objectives of the multilateral group EVS project “InterACTive Citizenship”:

1. To enable the mobility and participation of youth from European, African, Asian and Latin American countries in projects and activities dealing with community development,
human rights, children, environmental issues, the underprivileged, disabled, health, homeless, refugees, etc.

2. To promote intercultural learning and dialogue and strengthen mutual understanding, respect and friendship through cooperative citizenship actions in Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America.

3. To initiate through non-formal educational tools and intercultural learning approaches a self-process of reflection that counter preconceived notions,
perceptions and attitudes on the part of both the volunteers and the local community.

4. To allow youth to understand what active citizenship means and entails and that as citizens we can and must bring about change in society.
Their volunteering will assist them in identifying the challenges faced by local NGOs in activating civil society to social action.
Volunteers’ interACTion will serve to develop their communication and practical skills and competencies, leading to their own holistic - social, personal and professional - development.
